Indústria Aeronáutica Neiva, a subsidiary of Embraer, delivered today the 900th EMB 202 Ipanema crop-duster aircraft, in a ceremony held at the company headquarters in Botucatu.

The Ipanema crop-duster is a sales leader in this segment, with 30 years of uninterrupted production and about 85 percent of the national fleet, which today counts some 1,000 units.

“Brazil is becoming one of the main global agricultural producers, and dusting crops with aircraft has definitely contributed for that,” said Paulo Urbanavicius, Managing Director of Neiva.
“Today the agribusiness’ yield is secured thanks to sophisticated, high-technology implements, and we are proud to see the Ipanema taking part in this success”.

The Ipanema no. 900 is the sixth aircraft of the fleet owned by Grupo Maggi, the world’s largest soybean cultivator, with a crop of 286,600 acres. Based in the state of Mato Grosso, the company exports to Europe and Japan, is now taking delivery of its sixth aircraft and has a seventh on order.

Itamar Locks, Managing Director of Agropecuária Maggi, stated: “Our production has increased at a yearly rate of 15 percent, and one of the main factors of that expansion is the Ipanema."

The EMB 202 Ipanema 2003 orderbook currently counts 56 firm orders, valued at US$ 12 million. These figures exceed by almost 100 percent the Ipanema sales recorded in 2002, when Neiva sold 29 aircraft.

Ipanema’s main customers are located in states such as Maranhão, Bahia, São Paulo, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Tocantins, Paraná, Goiás, Roraima, Minas Gerais and Rio Grande do Sul.
The aircraft is delivered with a gasoline-powered engine, but most of the contracts were signed with the option for its retrofit to burn alcohol. With the alcohol-powered engine, the same fuel used in automobiles, the Ipanema capitalizes on a new cost/benefit ratio in items such as operational cost and added horsepower.

The project is being developed with the technical support of Lycoming, Precision and Hartzell, manufacturers of the engine, the fuel injection system and the propeller group, respectively. Neiva believes alcohol to be a viable option to the crop-duster market because the fuel is environmentally friendly and research data indicates it can extend the engine maintenance cycle, making it even more promising.

The model to be fitted out with the alcohol-powered engine is the latest, the EMB 202 'Ipanemão.' It yields 300 horsepower and its hopper capacity is 40 percent superior to its predecessor’s, carrying 950 liters (250 gal) of chemicals. Aerodynamic enhancements such as winglets and a new fuselage profile have improved the aircraft’s performance, making it faster and more productive. On top of that, the Ipanema is delivered with air conditioning as standard equipment.
