The fuselage was increased in length by 5 in (0.13 m) to provide more room in the cabin: wider cabin doors were fitted, including increased window area, and this eased access to the rear seats. The occupants of which enjoyed a 50 per cent increased in leg-room. |

New aerodynamically-efficient glassfibre wingtips were fitted and wing span was increased by 2 ft (0.61 m) to accommodate additional fuel tanks which raised total usable capacity from 48 to 82 US gallons (182 to 310 litres). To compensate for the longer fuselage, larger, all-moving horizontal tail surfaces were fitted, ad to ease servicing of the 235-hp (175-kW) Avco Lycoming 0-540-B4B5 engine a new easily-removable two-piece glassfiber cowling was introduced, incorporating a landing light located directly beneath the spinner. |

In 1978 Piper introduced the PA-28-236 Dakota, which combined the fuselage of the PA-28 Archer/Arrow line with the increased-span tapered wing that had been a feature of the PA-28 Warrior of 1973. Powerplant comprised a 235-hp (175-kW) Avco Lycoming 0-540 engine, and increased capacity fuel tanks were incorporated in the wings to cater for this more powerful engine. |

In the same way the Pathfinder was superseded by the Dakota in the USA, EMBRAER in Brazil planned to replace the EMB-710C by an EMB-710D that is essentially the same as the Dakota. The Turbo Dakota, introduced in the following year, is not directly derived from the Dakota, but from the Cherokee Arrow, and this is reflected by the PA-28-201T designation. Its powerplant is a 200hp (149-kW) Continental TSIO-360-FB turbocharged engine. |

All three PA-28s described were available with different packages of optional equipment, those for the currently-produced Dakota Turbo Dakota marketed as Custom and Executive packages. But despite the permutations of wing and fuselage, and the confusion of names, all of these PA-28s are four-seaters. The details that follow apply to the PA-28-236 Dakota. |
